What is it?

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. It is considered a potent antioxidant. I should also note that products with vitamin C in them should be stored in opaque and airtight containers. (A clear indicator of a real product)

What does it do?

As a serum, Vitamin C offers a rapid absorption and deep penetration. It can brighten age spots and hyperpigmentation. It is also known to aid in healing because the increase in Vitamin C  helps boosts your immune system. With injuries it is known to reduce irritation and inflammation of your wounds.

Our bodies do not produce Vitamin C naturally but it is necessary for the biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine and certain other neurotransmitter. There are current studies right now that say Vitamin C may help prevent and treat UV-induced photodamage. (HOWEVER you should still wear sunscreen as it does not absorb UVA/UVB rays) I say all of this to say that Vitamin is pretty much crucial for your skin to be flawless.

What products is it in?

Creams, Moisturizers, and Serums

Studies have shown max absorption no more than 30% concentrations.

Side Effects

When using Vitamin C, exposure to the elements will slowly cause some degradation. Specifically you should note that ascorbic acid is the least stable but most effective. The homemade (Synthetic) derivatives such as ascorbate phosphate are stable but have limited permeability. (That is why you see hardly see this used especially in Natural products) When looking for products (unless your dermatologist is giving it to you of course) you really should not be looking for products with concentrations greater than 20%.
